How To Build A Dining Table

poet

At the end of 2010 and before 2011 in his first year allegedly wailing weeping and damn, I want to thank our readers, regular or occasional visitors followers of this blog, the attention I have been dispensed and, especially, comments, questions and observations that have been the shipping details and have attempted to answer, where possible.

Blogs are now a fruitful reality, through which people we do not know, sometimes far apart geographically, we formed a kind of spiritual and cultural community, where we present experiences, feelings and knowledge, to arouse confidence interest, complicity, or at least mutual curiosity.

For me, as for many others to write a blog is a way of life, to express, to entertain myself and say what I think. Baltasar Gracian said that the journey of life there are three seasons: the first is to talk with the dead (the books), the second, with the living, the third himself. Apart from that there are many great books live more than most mortals, I think, daring to clarify the thinking of the learned Jesuit of Aragon, which is good not to lock itself and maintain with others, even if distant, a relationship that, at least for me, today, is very rewarding.

So the prospect of renewed energy to start with a new season blogger, I wish everyone, dear readers, health and happiness for 2011 (it seems naive to me also wish you prosperity). And I hope, thought added to the traditional formula, not cejéis in your quest or need to know more things, whether through lectures, discussions or travel. Curiosity is certainly not equivalent to happiness but mitigates the loneliness and smooth, as Montaigne would say "the wrinkles of the spirit" and that, when they have crossed the ports of maturity, as in my case, it is enough.

to everyone, at heart, Happy 2011.

Carmen de Burgos (Colombine), a life of film

" English beauty is a kind [...] nose, thin and gentle [...] mouth, static, schoolgirl, with two corners fine chin [...] a happy childhood with a hole subtle [...] [...] as if she remained alive in his portrayal of girl " ( Ramón Gómez de la Serna )

suspect that for the present generation readers, the name of the writer Almeria Carmen de Burgos (Colombine) (1867-1932) is almost unknown. His works are very abundant, were banned during the Franco regime and this has contributed to the almost universal neglect of the literary figure, which, however, is coming out in recent years, thanks the publication of a couple of good biographies, at least one of them, excellent 1 and celebration of the centennial of the encounter between the writer and Ramon Gomez de la Serna in 1909 2.

My sudden interest in this writer comes from the accidental finding in a used bookstore, one of his novels "The antique " 3 , confused between a lot of literary novels pink and acquired for the modest price of 2 € 4 .

Before reading this book, I tried to find some biographical features of the author that, read and verified, I am amazed, besides for his immense culture, decision and firmness of character that reveal, in a traditionally prudish Spain, especially from the perspective of a woman's fundamental. Could qualify for a life of film, "novel" his biographer calls it Núñez Professor King, no less than that we usually have our French neighbors of their national myths such as Colette, Piaf or Coco Chanel. Biography

Carmen de Burgos Segui was born in Rodalquilar (Almería) on 10 December 1867, "in one of his great estates, of which he owns" 5 , daughter of Jose Burgos Cañizares, owner and Vice Consul Portugal in Almería, and I kept Nieto Nicasia 6, marriage she would have ten children .

He married very young, at sixteen, against the wishes of his father, Arturo Alvarez Bustos, journalist, son of the governor of Almeria, fourteen years her senior, settled in that city. His father owned a printing press that was made in the local newspaper, which allowed him to become familiar with that world 7. He had four children, of whom only survived him a daughter, Mary, who would, at the same time, a lot of satisfaction and also a lot of headaches. His husband, " the biggest mistake of my life " he was unfaithful and abusive in word and deed, and she decided to leave him to die the second of his daughters, marching with Mary at Madrid. Previously, in 1895, had begun studies of Education, graduating in 1898 at the Normal School of Teachers of Granada, where he keeps his record and run 8 Almeria poor girls' school "Santa Teresa" (1899-1901) .

Ramón Gómez de la Serna, who lived with a gripping story of love and work for twenty years, told us so, so sublimated his early days in Madrid: " Carmen came to Madrid to rebuild their lives, without resources, with her daughter in her arms, like those poor shawl with beating his son under the shawl in a piece of them and the child, the child who is a mild and high bulk which ends uplifting the stature of the mother, and it seems like that child embedded in stone, and one being built in it of Our Lady of the Almudena. Carmen, with her hat and her daughter thought always in arms, he studied mastermind, won his opposition to Normal mingling all that with articles on all sides and even strips at home writing a dressmaker who had a regular fashion. Carmen was then Carmen de Burgos and to give variety his name used pseudonyms naive and romantic "Raquel" Honorine "Marianela". Distressed, nervous, tired, writing for a living, until finally it was the first "editor" of newspapers. By then Augusto Figueroa, the great journalist, he said one day to the output of "Universal Journal:" You must sign Colombine "and she was called since then" Columbine. "

indeed arrived in the capital of Spain, Carmen de Burgos start writing literary essays and poems at the same time, again contested to obtaining a place at the Ecole Normale de Guadalajara (1901). In 1905 he obtained a scholarship for further studies abroad and in 1907 was commissioned to carry out the Department of Home Economics at the School of Arts and Industries 9 Madrid, where series travels to Madrid and the Deaf and Blind 10 . That same year he transferred to the Superior Normal School of Teachers in Toledo (perhaps as punishment following an article by her and published in the Heraldo de Madrid which did not satisfy the academic authorities), " where he was trapped in a hostile environment that surrounded it snares " new note 1 so can travel to madrid weekends only new note 2 In 1909 he moved to Madrid as Assistant Section of Literature at the Central Normal School Teachers 11, while playing, since 1910, the Chair of Home Economics in the College of Industrial Arts and Industries of Madrid. In January 1911 he was appointed special lecturer in the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid, founded in 1871 and a month later obtained by opposing the position of tenured professor in the Department of Literature at the Normal School of Teachers in Madrid.

autodidact, polemicist, faced with the most reactionary sectors of society for their positions towards women's vote in favor of divorce and against the death penalty, his literary output is very numerous: more than one hundred novels and many short and long books of other genres including studies include political and social issues that currently exists, as well as travel books, biographies ("Larra", "Leopardi"), translations, educational studies, etc.. It was the first war correspondent in Morocco for the newspaper El Heraldo de Madrid, one of the most prestigious of the time

Despite its many activities had time to travel to Europe and America and to cultivate literary friendships and personal . Rafael Cansinos-Assens left us in his gossipy " a writer's novel " 12 a vision, a bit frivolous, the writer and the people who attended the literary salon on Wednesday, first in the street Eguilaz 7 and then at the mansion on Calle San Bernardo. Worthwhile, despite its superficiality, save a few paragraphs:

" is a woman, a modern young woman, who campaigned in favor of divorce and speaks in Republican circles, something new and interesting that deserves worth watching closely ... the first female journalist who does not is countess reports or blessed as Pardo Bazán ... "(1,200)

" Colombine, a woman tall brunette, pale and thick as a Valencia, dressed in street, but with an apron tight to the body. (1,200)

"Colombine The room is every day more lively ... Colombine is success and all come to hover around that blinding flame. Colombine is successful and can give it. Has the newspaper publisher has Sampere and is also ... a beautiful woman, a vulgar beauty, but attractive, ham rezogante and legend easy woman "(1. 391)

In policy field, Carmen de Burgos, embraced Republican principles, defended the inclusion of women in public life and voting female. To this end he founded the Crusade of English women, in imitation of the introduced in Portugal for his fraternal friend, Ana de Castro Osorio. Intellectually restless founded in 1908, the Alianza Hispano-Jewish media whose body was " Critical Review" in which prominent writers collaborated gestation, but then was of short duration.

On 9 October 1932, during a speech a meeting of Socialist Radical Circle in the street Francisco Ferrer 12 on a theme of "sex education", to finish the following sentence " At the wedding of the future , by taking the sayings, attended by the doctor, instead of confessor, fell ill, being transferred to his home in Nicasio Gallego 1 street where he died of a pulmonary edema complicated by heart failure. According to the newspaper "The Sun" 13 his last words were " I die happy because I die live the Republic Republican !".

Cansino Assens wrote: "He had a death secular glory, which makes it worthy to appear, as will appear, among the saints of the Republican calendar, with an aura of martyrdom. His last thought was for the Republic " (3366).
His civil burial at Madrid on 9 October, in the rain, Agran was an outpouring of grief.

Antiquarians

Ramón Gómez de la Serna was to this novel as one of the best of the author and among the best contemporary describes in detail and abundant detail the environment in which antique move that Carmen should know very well (apparently some cousins \u200b\u200bwere involved in the antiques), inventory for sale (jewelry, furniture, statues, china, silver, glassware, weapons, unique items) and employing tricks or skills to antiquarians "to fake." The bad thing about the novel, in my view is that, despite the change of scenery, Madrid, Paris and incursions by other cities, has a minimal story, which eventually bore the reader.

The book, written neatly, abounds in brilliant judgments and sentences that characterize the author, chronically ill, the tireless encouragement: "If it hurts one hand, I think worse is that I ache the two, it hurt me two, I think it hurt worse than cheese head, and when I hurt all I think the worst would be having died "or institutions Social: Al After the marriage the wife is a lady who comes to visit and never leaves . "

The novel also has enough of complaint regarding theft of English artistic heritage that the author concia closely during his "exile" in Toledo (withdrawal of the foreign sales of two paintings by El Greco for his owner, Count Guendulain). So the chapter that interested me most about this novel is the fourth " Old town" where he describes the journey that make marriage Toledo antiquarian for antiques, considered by pastors, administrators and even bishops as "a luxury useless " worth of discard in exchange for money in the legitimate exercise of their right to property " Antiquarians skillfully exploited this willingness and churches and convents were to them precious springs." Rescue

chapter IV another paragraph:

" Fabian entered the cathedral, looking suspicious of you think find a neglect to take something. I looked around and within a possibility. I knew from experience that it was all about price, not lack understood someone to replace a real object by another false . "

This view of the old city dam the greed of some and the prey of others, I think that is very close which gives us another writer of the time, Felix Navarro Urabayen (1883-1943), professor of literature at the Normal School of Toledo from 1911 to 1936 author of significant works such as "stripped Toledo " 14 .

I stay, wanting to read other works by this author that always characterized by its feisty character and his progressive spirit. I especially interested in his biography of Larra (Figaro , 1919), which many cite as a first exploration of the writer's life, but if someone recommended to me, I will read with interest any of the other his many works.

What was with the ease of my words, again I go to the gym of the expression. Ejercitábame once without will, perhaps read more, read better. Sadness cemented my pen and my ideas, now struggling to stay afloat after the long winter blues. Amores

Beautifully sad reality that hails from the dreams .. The desire for simple and beautiful storytelling. The desire to have a healthy body, an awakened soul, and spirit of infinite improvement. Self-esteem in spades.
