Aphorism Gracian does?

I read in the newspaper "El País " of September 19 Juan Cruz a text entitled " Aldecoa " the first paragraph begins like this:

"As he spoke Aldecoa Ignacio, one of the best English writers of the twentieth century, Mario Camus, who was his friend and also the lucky director of the film version of his novel " Birds of Baden Baden " he recalled yesterday a French saying: "We have to talk a lot about all things, a little about yourself and nothing else." If you were to meet this that there would television in this country. "

At first I was struck by the lack of specificity of this aphorism (reflection, maximum or above), referred to as " a French saying," no known author attributions, which shows, by the issuer (or editor), some forget the exact source. I thought intuitively recognize in this wise decision, which I myself have sometimes used in colloquial language, the paternity of our Baltasar Gracian and I rushed to check.

I have reviewed this purpose, the works of Jesuit Aragonese I have to reach in my library, including "The Discreet ", in editing the Library of English Authors 1, and subsequent "Oracle Manual Art and Prudence I have on the issue cited in the New Library of Authors Aragoneses (critical edition of Romera-Navarro) 2 and modern, with the title somewhat bastardized, (" The art of prudence. manual Oracle) Today's editions 3.

None of these issues I found (or have not managed to find) the exact phrase, as the article's transcribed, although lengthy discourses on the individual.

Thus, in "The Discreet ", "enhancement" V " Man news plausible, the author (masquerading as Lorenzo Gracian) discovers the discreet men: "They are found men who appreciate all said and seasoned observers around gallant fact, all current news of cuts, and campaigns . These are the oracles of curiosity and science teachers in this tasteful. " In another "enhancement" (XIX) "Female notante judicious and" commends such a man: " The wise man and notante (They are found few and therefore more unique) then becomes master of any subject and object .. . All we discover, note, notes, comes to and comprehend, defining each thing by its essence . "

By more laconic, in the "Oracle" computable between the best and most influential works of English and European thought " 4 and specifically in aphorism 117" Never talk about whether "thanks presents a proposal close to what we, the latter could be a trivialization. Transcribe the aphorism:

" Never talk about itself. Or have to praise, which is headed, or has to decry, it's smallness, and being guilty of sanity in which he says is worth the they hear. If this be avoided in familiarity, much more lofty positions, where they speak together, and passes through stupidity and any semblance of it. The same problem of sanity is talking about the present, because of the danger of hitting one of two pitfalls: to flatter or reproach. " Gracian

influences most of the French moralists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as Madame de Sable, La Rochefoucauld, La Bruyere and others. It is possible that the writings of some of them are, in French, the phrase, as has been transcribed into Castilian. I've reviewed, at a brisk pace, the "Reflections or moral judgments and Highest "Duke of La Rochefoucauld and have found no equal, although several in the same line preventing the excesses in the conversation.

The rotation between centuries, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche are the most grateful readers Gracian. Schopenhauer, heir to the pessimism of Aragon, is a lot like aphorism "Never talk about yourself "

"We must not abandon to commend ourselves, we have much right to it. Because it is so common as rare vanity and merit, that every time we seem to praise us, even if only indirectly, all bet a hundred to one that expressed by our mouth was vanity, which is not sufficient reason to make him understand how ridiculous the praise itself. "

and ending the twentieth century, Gratian's work takes on a new vitality, edited in 1992 and the United States, "The Art of wordly Wisdom. A pocket oracle "(" The art of universal wisdom. A Pocket Oracle) 5 , translated by Christopher Maurer, which sold 200,000 copies, staying for 18 weeks (two in the first place) List nonfiction best sellers in the Washington Post. Ranked by the writer and collector Gail Goldwin phrases as "a Machiavellian but unscrupulous" lineup that undoubtedly would have astonished the same grace, "as conservative evangelical writer like the most " his "manual Oracle "as an American, became intellectual grass those executives and yuppies who worshiped the" business excellence "at the end of the nineties, before the arrival of the financial crisis.

In 2001, during the fourth centenary of the birth took place in Spain and other countries, conferences, seminars and other events on the work and thoughts of Grace for academic comfort of the flock (the people, the "mass of common people" he would say grace, always has been to cool these things, stupid as it is in our time on television .) Today, those past anniversaries of the fourth centenary, the waters have returned to their usual channel and Gracian remains, as before, an author so often quoted (" good thing if brief, twice good ") and little read .

With this digression, I think I have strayed somewhat from the question of paternity of that phrase, I understood that, unless the contrary as a vulgarization of the aphorism graciano 6. To see if please some specialist "graciniano" (I think so named) or a knowledgeable person, including those Mario Camus and Juan Cruz can make me doubt. Is rewarded with another aphorism, naturally Gracian " There is nothing that man cultivated more than knowledge."

Miguel de Unamuno. Dying in Salamanca

" You are hanging on my words. I know well and know that I am unable to remain silent. Sometimes the same as lying to remain silent, because silence can be interpreted as acquiescence. He had said he would not talk, because I know, but I have been pulled from the language and I have to. There has been talk here of international war in defense of a Christian civilization, and I myself have done it before. But, ours is just an uncivil war. I was born rocked by civil war and what say. Overcoming is not convinced and need to be convinced of all, and can not convince the hatred that leaves no room for compassion, hatred of intelligence, which is critical and differentiating, but not of inquisition inquisitive.

want to comment the speech, to call in some way, Professor Maldonado. I will leave aside the personal offense that involves the sudden explosion against the Basques and Catalans, calling the Anti-Spain, as well, with the same reason they can say as much. And here is the bishop who, like it or not like, is Catalan, born in Barcelona, \u200b\u200bto teach Christian doctrine not want to know, and I, who as you know was born in Bilbao, Basque and I am all my life teaching you the English language, you do not know. Now that's empire, the English language, and no ...

Thus " before an audience hostile " Don Miguel de Unamuno began his brief speech, interrupted by force in the academic ceremony commemorating the discovery of America on October 12, 1936 in the auditorium of the University of Salamanca. "... mouth is warmed, he untied her tongue, and said he thought no matter the consequences or the circumstances ...". The circumstances are known and told by the biographers of Unamuno (Emilio Salcedo 1, Colette and Jean Claude Rabat 2 , consequences, recreated by Luciano G. Egido in the book that leads to this comment "in Salamanca dying," were the expulsion or immediate dismissal of Don Miguel in all positions (city council and, above all, rector of the University) and confinement at home Bordadores the street, equivalent to an internal exile, constantly guarded by police, with little external contacts, tragic in solitude confinement senile retired, possibly hasten his death on December 31, 1936.

Egido Luciano González is, as I have known, a writer of a late vocation. His first book " Salamanca Red Quartz " appeared in 1993 when he was sixty-five. Seven years earlier he had prepared this " agonize in Salamanca, biographical essay, politics, literature over the last months of the thinker with the fiftieth anniversary of his death. Then he has published several books and continues joyfully active at eighty-two years.

This book admirable and essential, "according to critic of El Pais, the author gets into the skin, creative thinking and feelings of the Basque-Salamanca rebuilding support in their past and contemporary texts (private letters , notes, speaking to reporters ...) the last months of life, in intimate solitude, lost " between the Huns and hotra."

The initial applause to the military uprising he believed led to the defense of Western Christian civilization, a "simple cleaning operation for the security of the Republic" , as he had assured his friend Francisco de Cossio, as derived-front was incompatible with human freedom of worship, spiritual concerns and lover of tradition, gave way, as time passed and heard first hand witness direct the executions without trial of many friends and colleagues to disgust, the revulsion, contempt for both sides (the "Huns and hotra ") engaged in an uncivil war whose only explanation was a kind of "madness collective "had seized the English.

Before the meritorious and hard-working intellectual ramblings Luciano G. Egido, accompanied by frequent "flash backs" literary, I prefer to listen to the anguished voice of Unamuno speaking of himself and the state of their city, Salamanca, once the capital of the Renaissance and now a military barracks:

.. . 'with what I suffer to see this moral suicide of Spain, this collective madness, this epidemic freopática, with its sad base, in large part, of some bodily illness and I'll just imagine. Between one and another, or rather, the Huns and hotra-are bloody, bleeding, blasting, poisoning and headlong to Spain. Yes, yes, they are horrible things that WILL have hordes delas calls red, but what about the reaction to them?. Especially in Andalusia ... What in the rear?. It's a stupid rule of terror. Here are shot without forming process and without justification. To some they say that is a Mason, no longer is this do not know the beasts that shoot for it. And nothing is worse than the marriage of the barracks mentality of the sacristy. And then the spiritual leprosy of Spain, resentment, envy, hatred of intelligence ... Between Marxists and fascists, between the Huns and hotra will leave Spain invalid spirit 3 .

Luciano G. Egido referenced several times throughout the book, about "war notes" that Don Miguel has been writing and that "exceeded much prudence and loyalty of its public statements " . The reader would have appreciated more information on these notes and the transcript of one of its possible contents 4 . This absence of references, subjectivism implicit in recreating the mood of Don Miguel and rhetorical excesses (the " apezuñamiento " from the crowds, the comparison of "I" Unamuno with " erect penis ") and lyrical (" old man must have felt loneliness like a blanket useless), I'm not entirely convinced by this book, despite the correctness of his staging, and the undoubted quality whole literary narrative.
dying means "struggle" ( The Agony of Christianity). Agonizes who lives fighting against life itself. " Such is the agony of Don Miguel de Unamuno, man fight, struggle with himself, with his people and against its people, hostile man, a man of civil war, tribune without supporters, solitary man, an exile, wild speaker in the desert, provocative, vain, deceitful, paradoxical, irreconcilable, irreconcilable enemy of nothing and who comes and eats nothing, torn between life and death, death and resurrection at once invincible and always up ". When Jean Cassou this writer is in 1924, but twelve years later, in 1939, his agony was already higher, tripled by the agony of their ideas and the final throes of its existence .
I stay, finally, with the vision that gave Max Aub on Unamuno q eu prefer other visions of the operator : "Tall, handsome as owl-if it can be," hair that he soon turned gray and white, hairy. Black clothing, the immaculate clerical collar, walked with long strides, his hands clasped behind his back, but a friend of talk that talk, inward looking, eager to read the first one you faced his last see you, always overflowing. No other love than the Church is holy, distrustful of women as they were not in their role as mothers, constantly burning indignation. Charity seems to have been under his loves, was known selfish, perhaps envious, to get rid of these evils portrayed them as few. Spain loved as much as the poetry, confused them. It was possibly the most important writer of his time, and there were many more fruitful brother both wrote. Spanned more than anyone, the most personal. So involved in his work, so preoccupied with survival that was full "slices to be immortal, like Quevedo said."

LA FAMILIA RIVADENEYRA EN EL EDIFICIO VIZCAYA

U n bit of history:
RIVADENEYRA FAMILY IN THE BUILDING VIZCAYA
Some brothers RIVADEREYRA (In this picture there are still 2 per birth)

Pasquel Rivadeneyra Family
In 1968, for the month of October and just at the opening of the Olympic Games in Mexico, came the family move Rivadeneyra B8 department, from the town of Tapachula in the state of Chiapas, there, by where the border with Guatemala, a town of barely a hundred thousand inhabitants.

days The family was already residing in Mexico City from September 20 of that year. We lived in Grandma Tatit which lived in the apartment E1, (but that is another story.)

This family consisted of father, mother and 10 siblings. Don Alfonso, Doña Anita and children Ana (Nitis), Alfonso (El Guero), Ignacio, Aurora, Eugene and Alexander (twins), Francis and Edward (twins), and Cecilia Guadalupe.

RIVADENEYRA TWINS (Eugenio y Alejandro)

Soon after arriving, the city is sucite Mexico's student movement. We were in the middle school and vocational Issac Ochoterena 2 of the Citadel and on top, one block from the building of the Interior.

Older siblings, Guero y Nacho went to study at the school 3, in Chapultepec Avenue, the brothers men (Eugene, Alejandro, Francisco and Eduardo came to study at the Miguel de Unamuno primary, on the streets of Berlin. The women sisters Aurora Lupita and entered the primary Cecilia Ma Victor Flores Street in Barcelona. Nitis Our older sister, came to study at a business school in the streets of Naples since I was about to turn 16.

the undersigned this document is Eduardo and when we reached Bucareli I was 7. The department was cool, huge, with a very large room, large dining room with its stained glass. They had 4 bedrooms, that of Alfonso and Nacho but it was a bit small, the bedroom of the twins and twins, the chamber of the 4 women and at the end of the second hallway the bedroom of my parents.

My parents were very practical and organized our team, Alfonso, Alejandro and I were a team as Nacho, Eugene and Francis were the other equipment. Whenever we won them in all activities, such as making bedding, uniforms, bathing, going to school etc.

Memories come and go at a speed so fast and sometimes stops by spaces. The music was for many years a measure of joy in the house with a large console, discs 33 and 45 rpm. The music was varied, from Armando Manzanero my mother, to the music of the Beatles of my older brothers. Palito Ortega music and my sister Nitis Sandro like music by Alberto Cortes and Aurora Ma Serrat.

Memories go, memories come, such as running out of water in the apartment and having to lose those 108 steps from the fourth floor to private and be up buckets of water.

Memories as the first friends, where we played on the roof of the building. Dyanna Meyer friendships, or as the great James, the close friends of B6, the Torres Martinez family and then left, Toño, Reuben, Robert, Pina, etc. A family with children of ages as ours and that helps a lot. Games on the roof were different, the ball fell from the roof and goalkeeper Gustavo us removed. Do not want to forget about any of the neighboring department B7, Ms. Carmen Cordero, accompanying the various parts of the city.

The building Vizcaya, there are elevators in each tower, with a sign in each elevator with FHLOR LIFT name. These elevators worked in his great age, but when we got there, they were useless.

VISTA FLOHR elevator building Vizcaya. Currently
refurbished respecting its beautiful design.

was here, where the first friends and classmates, the first girlfriend, the first football team, which was in 1971 or 1972 when I became interested in a team, America. It was here in this department, where we visited Uncle Leonard, meals became teachers, 15 years of Aurora, the first communion of 4 boys. It was here where we saw the eclipse of 69, the moon landing, the first color TV, complete with Christmas tree and gifts to each one, sometimes few and sometimes several. Here we get sick of chickenpox 6 brothers at the same time, came here and had everything. A large family in a large department in a large building.

So far my first comment. Hope you like and be published, hoping that another brother or character in the history of Bucareli continue and expand my information.

Dyanna, I love you.
