The blind ants, Ramiro Pinilla

H horn the appearance of his major novels, the series " green valleys, red hills " 1 , this novel by Ramiro Peña (Bilbao, 1923), " The blind ants "Nadal Prize and the Critics Award in 1961, recently reissued 2, was considered" as the quintessential Basque novel ", to the extent that, as pointed out by Fernando Aramburu in the preface to this new edition combines the stubborn mentality of the Basque people with a cruel fate" that has finally prevailed in the history of my countrymen. " Since then, attended the above, I am not likely to introduce pre-reading of this work, the only one I know of the author, however, as I am struggling reader, I have come, in earnest, at the end of this story really dark and airtight.

The argument seems to be taken from real events lived in "old times." Unleashed a furious storm on the coast Cantabrian thrown against the cliffs a British ship loaded with coal that is spread on the rocks. As a human wave, a whole people come at night to pick up the black gold they so desperately need to heat their homes, braving the risks of storm, cold, and wave height. Among those who go there is the family home Jaúregui Sabas, consisting of a father and his four children Fermín, Cosme, Bruno and Ishmael, but his brother Peter.

" There it was, hanging and indifferent, while others were still holding the rope, the father approached him and, from the edge of the mountain, grabbed his right hand and placed it tip earthy corner, while most of us said rope. Then, surrounded by (the father and the sack) of all, untied the rope and dropped it and opened the mouth of the bag, stretched their heads, we saw: bright carbon black irregular pieces, neither large nor small, the cold with only comforted him with enough power to launch the nations to war, greasy, materialization of the charity that provides warmth, grateful to us, his predestined unearthed ... "

rescue operation in the coal dies Fermín accidentally, one of the children. The remaining family members, which must be added the mother, Josefa, younger sister, Neil, and grandmother, strive to conceal the couple dead brother's body and the valuable cargo of ore, sheltered from the curiosity of the neighbors and the Civil Guard investigation.

Critics see in this novel Steinbeck formal influences (" The Grapes of Wrath") and Faulkner (As I Lay Dying ). As in the above, other family members separately Jauegui tell the story which they live and contemplate forming a prism narrative provides the reader with their different points of view. One of the characters for which the author seems to have a predilection, the youngest son, Ismael, fourteen years ago in Nexus connection between multiple accounts, but the relevant figure is the plot of the father, Sabas Jauregui, strong man, the "blind ant" careful to follow the route and transporting the load, overcoming all obstacles

"Always continuing. They stumble and rise. Are prepared to defeat everything that is put forward. They are invincible. Have been created with the slogan and meet. "

Like the blind ant, Sabas Jaúregui a man is invincible, unavailable to the failure: " will face a host of adversities, even child lost in the attempt to lead his family to despair and to exhaustion, if the ill muster against the people, to the end, not getting the fruit that has painstakingly pursued " 3 .

Well written, (I learned the meaning of Basque and Castilian words for me so far unknown as acullu "," hopper, "" cartola " gorse", not "gorse "or" talo "), with some artificiality in some dialogues and ruminations of the characters, and perhaps some anachronism (the quote from the movie" The Three Musketeers "), with a solid plot, dark as coal, is, despite the effort that has been reading an interesting novel, which, as the author himself acknowledges in the preface written on the occasion of this new edition, will have supporters and detractors but in any case leaves reader indifferent.

Now I can. Now that I have the time and serenity, I must return to those practices that enriched my soul and sustenance served at the most joyful and somber, at times uphill and downhill stuff, that when looking at the view and remember, make it happier.

morning I read in the press (in Madrid there is no evening papers) that the Santander Bank Foundation has published a book of Agustin de Foxa 1 containing little literary material known by this author, famous during the civil war and its aftermath, along with one of his plays in verse, best known Cui-Ping-Sing, which these days has earned the praise of Luis Maria Anson 2 and that According to this account, the director liked film, Juan Antonio Bardem, at odds ideologically with the Count de Foxa.

This news has reminded me that I was in my youth Foxá reader in an edition of his Complete Works (Volume I retain only) that English Press published in 1964. Have read, when you are twenty years to this Phalange official author, is one of those peccadilloes of youth over time has been occupied and which dissipate at this point in my life I have nothing to be ashamed.

Agustín de Foxa (1906-1959) is remembered today for his work than "very well done and something antañona" 3 for his rudeness and irony: "We rolled out fascism in Spain and let us go to live abroad", possibly blinded, under its apparent cynicism, a sensitive temperament. Diplomat since 1930 "a luxury in the diplomatic service," as he defined himself, was certainly hated by many college friends and mistreated by the ministry: "I sent back to the tropics, it is my certain death." I still remember seeing a picture of him posted on ABC where he saw his move to Madrid by air, and mortally wounded, lying on a stretcher. Augustine had a brother, Jaime, and seasoned pro Falangist hunter in the 60's of last century was much the "s boring" on English television (the only one then was) and came to be appointed civil governor of Toledo, where he is remembered also for his sentences, like that of "Toledo each time is farther away "to make explicit the communication problems that existed between Madrid and the Imperial City.

As I say, twenty years, I read Foxá (except for journal articles) and admit that I liked his poem "postmodern" románticoide classicism that was well suited to be recited "sotto voce" and thus linked with the girls that was the ultimate goal of my generation (and of which have happened then, I guess). I still remember some loose lines:

" And where is that boy of communion and hoop
today, my blood of man, like a ghost play"

"To think that after I morning there will still die

that under a bright blue sky, spring
indifferent to my house season
incarnate in the silk of the roses
"

I especially liked that verse that began:

"Thank you, because you gave me your grace and guessed
teenager in your womb collegiate water
"

That the "college within " brought me yours about the " mouth párvula song "sufferer, which helped to create an ideal model girlfriend that he was only in my fevered mind.

I also read, I think it's a stretch, his novel " Madrid, Czech cutting", completed in September 1937, civil war, a kind of chronic subjective history of the conflict, seen and judged by a young lifetime rights and a critic, Jaime Siles, see, in my opinion, too, "one of the best novels of the twentieth century."

But what I liked most was his Foxá verse drama "Prom Captain" (1944), romantic drama set in the scene of the Carlist wars and, above all, "Cui-Ping Sing, "some of whose verses memorized. This work was premiered in the Teatro Principal in San Sebastian during the civil war, on December 28, 1938, before an audience, I imagine, composed mainly Falangists uniformed military and their families, which would be somewhat shocked by so beautiful and delicate "chinoiserie." The argument of the book, succinctly stated as follows:

The sweet and beautiful Cui-Ping-Sing is the only daughter of Afo, a longtime trainer of fish. They live alone in a cabin in a remote area of \u200b\u200bthe Empire. The father refuses to fishermen suitors of his daughter as too little to her. A day comes to the humble cottage, Hoang-Ti, prime minister and favorite of the emperor, the prototype of every wise man learned in books. Commissioned by their sovereign comes to take you to the Palace portraits of the most beautiful girls from all corners of the Empire, so choosing between them would be his new wife. While Chang, the painter who accompanied him on his journey, set in the canvas, perfect features of the girl, Hoang-Ti and Cui-Pig-Sing will love each other, to the satisfaction of the elderly parent concerned.

Cui-Ping-Sing, my daughter
our bamboo hut and mud came
happiness;
not miss it like a swan
that touches a window at night
and is lost after

Hoang-Ti this "casting" for the girl and so is recognized the painter:

I love because it is perfect and clear
as astronomy. My youth

dusty book raises in his mouth

Love that is matched by the beautiful who asked his beloved:

you love me my lord?

What this answer shaky

About this hut will
Blue Palace
With my touch our children
Our bleeding edge
bedroom garden will
kisses fall into the hive or
roses will know your mouth strawberry
butterflies and bees will dance in the bridal lamp.

Love sensed by Hoang-Ti from centuries ago:

Listen
What other rare cherry world
your voice heard? On which planet
slow snow bronzes and saw your eyes
a million centuries ago Where were you?

finished their mission. Hoang-Ti and Chang have to return to the Emperor's Palace ells carrying with portraits of thirty girls pure, the most beautiful of the Empire. Hoang fears Cui-Pin-Sing is chosen to be Empress:

The other women but she is love.
The other pass,
look and kiss, they are blue lakes
on whose banks reflects the soul.
But she is not reflected
lake, drowning.
His flesh is immortal, is by far
and has lived for centuries with ours.
deserved
His chest feathers, or scales to protect
against the breeze in the morning.
has in her white fingers
key sources and dreams, his breath

polishes the mirror of the moon.

Huang-Ti think to hide the portrait, but it is impossible for the governor of the province where you live Cui-Pin-Sing has warned of its existence the Emperor. However, Chang convince the painter to shatter the beauty of his beloved in the material, deforming his smile.

On his return found that the atmosphere of the Court has changed. The tyrant Chancellor Liang, who hates Hoang-ti because years ago she refused to her niece as a wife, is the new favorite. Hoang-Ti is graciously received by the Emperor, who, impatient, began to contemplate the thirty portraits of the most beautiful women of the Empire. When looking at the portrait deformed Cui-Pin-Sing is attracted to his eye

His eyes wrapped me in silk
heart. Hot Kisses

I fly through the roof of the mouth

of their mouths torn But that breaks the harmony of her beautiful face and away from the preferences of the Emperor, while it approaches the love of Hoang-Ti:

Thanks, Fo-I, spirit of air, and genii
night.
Thank
severe shadows of my ancestors.
It's mine ... and forever.
My soul has two bloods,
my veins, two beats.

Hoang-Ti, which has left the Emperor, and left the court, lives with Cui-Pin-Sing, happy together for three years in the palace he had built on the old fisherman's hut , the girl's father, now deceased, but with the hidden fear that the sweet dream end abruptly. And so it goes. Chang, painter, confesses, including delusions, on his deathbed, deception and reveals where the couple is hidden. Known history, Liang, the powerful chancellor and rival of Hoang-Ti, tells the emperor who has to travel to the city where he lives willing to steal his wife.

Hoang-Ti, warned by his friend, the Astrologer the emperor, rejected the offer that makes him flee disguised as a fisherman and directed to prepare a welcoming banquet which should assist Cui-Pin-Sing. To save his love and escape the danger that stalks them, there is only one possibility of sacrifice: Cui-Pin-Sing shred her beauty, tearing his mouth with a knife, which is reached by love for her husband.

If, for you, I tear off my husband's mouth

break my smile.
But tell me
"disfigured my beauty, you still love me?

More than ever.
To get there, beloved,
to the distant peaks of love, we needed
pain.
already have. Tonight

mix the flesh and spirit.

Emperor arrives with his entourage, longing to behold the beauty of Cui-Ping-Sing. While they wait for the end of dressing for dinner, the conversation revolves around the torture traitors deserve. Finally comes the bride, but instead of seeing disfigured, appears more beautiful than ever :

Como infamous ... ..! Instead afearse

enhanced her beauty.

is more beautiful than ever.
was stronger than his ambition.

Turned into Empress, Cui Ping-Sing lives surrounded by pleasures and loved by her husband the Emperor. But this feels the bitterness of jealousy when it comes the memory of Hoang-Ti:

But first loved you. He had

your dawn of love, grace

your chest
intact and unspoilt
your eyes and flush your skin only knew
silk, air, water.
He enjoyed the silliness of your lips
the timid ignorance of your fingers to touch his body

transfigured touch on the touch
The routes taught you desire.

Jealousy that are fanned by the evil Chancellor Liang:

Hoang-Ti
should die Can not remember the law?
death penalty who usurp the thalamus of Prince
The lips that kissed your wife
should have the earth between his teeth
.

Knowing sentenced to death, and Cui Hong-Ti-Ping-Sing are seen :

Hoang-Ti, Hoang-Ti ... shocked to see that troubles my heart

is resurrecting the past, when he was just a dream

is true ... we dreamed
together ... down South ... There

loved a girl, daughter
a lovely old fish.

His face resembles that of the Empress, Our Lady. I accept the blame

can guess in your eyes ... The irony

that contain your words ...

not accuse you, Cui-Ping-Sing: allows you to call this old name

smelling flower and girl.
not blame you at all.

destination is playing with men, and gives
scepters or sores, or coffins
gardens;

meeting today and tomorrow apart.
... ..

The Empress of China do not care.
glass and porcelain doll
decorating the halls and gondolas
ambitious and cruel ... there I leave ...

white girl But your face recalls the sweet
Cui-Ping-sing, which among mulberry
embroidered and smiled ...
that come to look in your eyes
and I, in your face,
rebuild his face and blurred.
She's mine and I keep in my memory
like a coffin.

Hoang-Ti serene progress towards implementation. Knowing his fate, has entrusted his servants, after a few minutes, take home his coffin. Repentant Emperor wants to stop the execution but it is too late, the order is fulfilled. The evil Liang, instigator of the crime, will receive the same punishment .

do not know if this argument, here awkwardly reflected, or the characters in this play, or hot lines, will appeal to people today. The most likely not. Tastes change with each generation, as the customs and fashions, but to do today, many years, this reading of Cui Ping-Sing, I felt a pinch in the heart of nostalgia for the yellow time of the photographs, that in which we were young and, so, exactly, but naive and amorous.

La Novela de Hoy. "Honor Guard", in Martínez Olmedilla

Augusto Martínez Olmedilla from Madrid (1880-1965), to judge by reading his biography, was a writer with a letter that touched all styles: contemporary novels, stories, anecdotal novels, theater and several, according to his own classification, not counting their articles in newspapers and magazines, written over a thousand, in spite of which is now a forgotten author whose works are readily available at low prices on stocks selling books and on-line bookstores.

Examining the "underworld" in my library, I just found it a title Martínez Olmedilla, "Women of English Romanticism" 1 , brief biographical sketches of more or less famous women, written with fluency and amenity. However on my last visit to that box of surprises that is, every morning of Sunday, the flea market, I found, by chance, and bought it on purpose, for the modest price of 2 €, a short work of Martínez Olmedilla, " Honor Guard " published within the series' novels today "2 on June 12, 1931.

is in the first third of the twentieth century when it emerges in Spain a new editorial model popular collections of short fiction, which by its low cost, carried out massive print runs, it becomes the preferred reading in English and many cheapest form of entertainment. This collection of short literary collections (" Theatre La Novela," " The World Novel," " 's comic novel," " The Short Novel," "La Novela Semanal ") is being filed by the Council Scientific Research and to which the series that includes this short novel, "La Novela de Hoy , founded by Artemio Precioso, which, in 1928, alongside" The Novel Night "and the magazine" Thank ", members of the editorial package would be controlled by the powerful Latin American Company Publications (CIAP) in operation orchestrated by the banking Bauer and piloted by Pedro Sainz Rodríguez 3, which would be The director of this collection of short 4 literature.

Many years later, a longtime Rodriguez Sainz I wrote the following about his passage through CIAP:

" CIAP publishers that made ... came to be sections of an organic whole. Atlantis, for such popular publications such as La Novela de Hoy, which allowed the public taste humble little masterpieces of the most famous contemporary authors. It was I who personally took care of the direction of the novel of today, not because I had intended to make a selection of novelists of the epoch, but because it sought to purge it of a trend that today has become the epidemic of popular literature , of which at that time literature is called green and now, clearly and frankly, has become pornographic. I excluded most of a writer who specializes in that genre, although I must say that those authors compared to what is now displayed in stalls of books and journals, readings could be aimed at the Ursulines " 5 .

" honor guard" of Martinez Olmedo is not, of course, a small masterpiece, nor a novelette "peep", although it contains some expression of questionable taste (" I thought it was a clitoris with legs "), but rather a weaving of stories, supposedly funny that people are the protagonists to the theater, a medium that our author knew well (he wrote " Madrid's theaters. almanac of celebrity Madrid, published in 1947).

What most struck me is the language used, with some phrases and idioms, unusual or even unknown in our time. The 20 are, as the teacher has studied Perez-Rioja 6, a time of change where they live almost fossilized forms of colloquial language that refuse to die, starting with bold expressive witness and measure the times . In theater, specifically, where it develops action of the novel records the voices coming from outside, Gallicisms (" couplet," cabaret "," debut, "matinee " vedette "...) and to a lesser extent, Anglican (" dancing", " girl "...) and Italian (" clubhouse, "props "...). In this novel we find some of these strangers, " vaudeville," reprises "(reruns)," flirt " Soubrette (poor voice actress) "gentleman " been coat, marked in italics, to better distinguish them.

These neologisms on imports alternate with pure, traditional words and expressions, many of which have yet to come, more or less, to us, " If you were a man and not a Juan Lanas ..." (Male timid that lends to do everything you kindly send your spouse), " much I had noticed her as the Moro Muza " (in the unknown, anyone), "barbilindo (juveniles, precious cute and handsome) or others whose meaning is not as clear as water to a foot (do a task "anyone?), or is unusual," is seen as a nabob "(figuratively, very rich man") or whose use linguistic and precise meaning is unknown to modern man, " but it is possible that this girl ...?; tonga tonga Go with the girl, who gives them character!. Read

these forgotten authors holds some of the findings and helps to increase our vocabulary trite, but this only serves to show off to friends. So, dear reader / s of this blog, you recomiendo que leas un poco de todo, hasta “los papeles rotos de las calles”.
